The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expected to rule soon on two new weight-loss pills.
One, Accomplia, is made by the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi Aventis. Accomplia is a selective cannabinoid blocker, which works on the same receptors in the brain that cause marijuana users to overeat, the New York Times reports.
The other, Alli, made by GlaxoSmithKline, is a non-prescription version of the company's Xenical, which blocks fat absorption. The company plans to promote the drug as part of a lifestyle change, accompanied by information on diet and exercise.
Doctors involved in treating the country's obesity epidemic have mixed reactions to the new drugs.
